What is Structured Cabling (Cat 6 - 7)

To be competent in the installation of Structured Cabling (Cat 6) you should become a professional by completing a nationally approved course as listed below. The theory is completed on online. The final theory exams are completed online. You then complete hands on training at additional cost.

Structured Cabling installation refers to the design and installation of data cables used in Local Area Networks. These networks may small such as used in Smart Wired Homes or large as are found in Commercial Office Buildings. The cables are rated as to their electrical characteristics such as Cat 5, Cat 6 or Cat 7. The essential differences are the construction of the cables which over time have been improved to enhance the signal transmission while reducing induced crosstalk between pairs in the cable.

At the same time the termination products have also been improved and importantly these termination products are impedance matched to the cable. It is a simple rule of thumb to only use matched cable and product types, that is, Cat 6 cable is only used with Cat 6 products. It is also a good practice to match a manufacturers cable type with a manufacturers termination products.

Besides understanding the standards and testing practices the physical installation of any of these cables is identical. Cat 7 has one extra requirement and that is to use and terminate the shielding, braids/foils/drain wire, at both ends of the horizontal cables. This also means the patch cords must also be shielded style.

Here are the topics covered in this Nationally Accredited training and reference resource.

  • Section One - Basic Theory
  • Section Two - Cable Theory and Encoding Theory
  • Section Three - Lan topology and devices
  • Section Four - Lan protocols
  • Section Five - AS/NZS 3080 Structured Cabling Design
  • Section Six - AS/NZS 3080 Structured Cabling Testing Standards
  • Section Seven - AS/NZS 3084 Structured Cabling Installation
  • Section Eight - Installation Practices

This product is the only independent nationally approved training available. You can do product courses to gain vendor recognition. Product courses are great for learning about product but they don't have the time to spend on teaching you the International and Australian Standards.

Theory costs $345 online plus $200 for the hands on day plus hire or rent a Cat6 Hand Held Tester.
