EMPLOYING THE NEVER GIVE UP ATTITUDE
"To provide quality employment services to those most affected by unemployment."
The Salvation Army Employment Plus officially commenced operations under the government’s Job Network umbrella on 1st May 98 with offices located in every state in Australia.
In December 1999, The Salvation Army Employment Plus were awarded a three year contract by the Department of Employment, Work Place Relations and Small Business, (DEWRSB) to deliver the largest proportion of services under the Intensive Assistance component of the Job Network services. Employment Plus also have the second largest contract under the Job Matching component of Job Network and have commenced operations in 87 locations throughout Australia.
John Lucas the Queensland State Manager said "The primary objective is to provide quality employment services to employers people and unemployed, with the focus being on sustainable job placements that meet the needs of both employers and job candidates. We are assisted in this by our Right Track program.
Most ‘job placement’ methods require the job seeker to pick from a slim range of jobs, regardless of interest or suitability. Even if successful at obtaining the job, the chances of long-term employment is usually slim. Inevitably, they quit or are sacked within a short time and the unemployment cycle starts over. Ironically, this ineffective methodology is still common in a number of Australian employment agencies.
Right Track defies the standard job placement methodology for the vast majority of unemployed people. Instead of trying to get them into a job, any job, the Right Track model finds out what they would most like to do if they had the opportunity – no matter how far-fetched it may seem. Right Track then works on developing a plan of action to get them moving towards their goal… or right track.
The rational behind this is that the context of work is important – people are more willing to start in lower- to mid-level jobs if they are interested in the field. Their passion over what they do overcomes tiredness and setbacks. They are more committed to ‘never giving up’.
Its also important to identify natural skills to be able to place them somewhere they are capable," says John Lucas. "Combined with their fields of fascination, the result will be a career job and a dream job within a ‘field of fascination’. We want candidates to offer employers their passion as well as their skills.
The same care is taken with employers. We strive to obtain an understanding of all our employers’ expectations and industry cultures. The Right Track program is about finding success factors and championing them; helping and celebrating their successes to the benefit of employers and employees.
"We have extensive experience in recruiting positions in various occupations in a range of industries, including the retail sector, hospitality sector, manufacturing, office and commerce and health and personal services. So next time you need staff, why not give us a go! Remember our slogan ‘The Salvation Army Employment Plus…..we never give up!’."
